Encouragement for the Weary

I’ve been tired many times in my life. Tired in many different ways - for many different reasons. But none the less - TIRED>

  • Exhausted – mentally or physically used up

  • Weary – unable to endure any more

  • Drained – emptied, deprived of strength or vitality

  • Fatigued – weakened by repeated variations of stress

  • Stale – Unable to perform well after doing something for too long

  • Overworked – excessive use of

  • Finished – come to an end, nothing more to do with

At one point or another you may find yourself in one of these places.

I find myself in each and all of them.

So today --- I am simply asking God --- what are you teaching me here, in this tired place where I want to give up?

Have you ever been so tired you wanted to give up on something?

Not because you feel led to walk away, but to find relief and rest in walking away. It can be as simple as a conversation, or as weighted as a relationship. It can be the result of a complex project or as confusing as emotions. It can be as worldly as selfish wants, or spiritual and a prayer. We can reach a tired, weary place in many things – but when we want to give up, quit or back away from, we have to look to the Word to find our source of joy, strength and endurance. And for me – I have to find truth of my current circumstances.

My biggest struggle when I am weary is deciphering between God's truth & reality from the emotional inaccuracy & deception in the situation. The line becomes blurred the more tired we become.

If you find yourself here, seek encouragement for your weary selves in the words of God and His people below:

OLD TESTAMENT

And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” – Exodus 33:14

For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

2 Chronicles 16:9

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:28-31

For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.

Jeremiah 31:25

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?— the God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless.

Psalm 18:30-32

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. ...

Psalm 23:1-6

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:17-18

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him…

Psalm 37:7

Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.

Psalm 55:22

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my Salvation comes from Him.

Psalm 62:1

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

Psalm 62:5

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:26

Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.

You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.

I lift up my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip, he who watches over you will not slumber.

Psalm 121:1-3

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!

Psalm 126:5

In the day that I called, you answered me . You encouraged me with strength in my soul.

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

…he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

Proverbs 11:25

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Proverbs 16:3

NEW TESTAMENT

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

Mark 6:31

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

John 16:3

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

John 14:27

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:26-28

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:58

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
